CANDIDATES in the Murray River Council Moama and Greater Murray wards will go head to head at a public forum next week.
Committee for Echuca Moama will be conducting the event at the Moama Bowling Club.
C4EM chair Geoff Kelly said it would be an opportunity for the public to hear from the candidates before casting their vote on Saturday, September 9.
In the Moama ward, former councillors Chris Bilkey, Gen Campbell and Geoff Mackenzie have thrown their hat in the ring alongside newcomer Nicole Cohen.
Cohen has been heavily involved in Echuca-Moama Little Athletics and was a finalist for Murray Shire’s citizen of the year in 2015.
In Greater Murray, ex-mayors Tom Weyrich and John Pocklington will vie for positions with Mathoura On The Map committee chair Nicole Stenhouse and Moama businessmen Geoff Wise and Tony Aquino.
All candidates have been invited to attend but are yet to confirm.
‘‘I’ve sent a note to all candidates across the three wards to say it’s on but obviously we will be following those up later this week to confirm,’’ Mr Kelly said.
‘‘Absolutely I would encourage the public to attend. It has become a bit of a fixture — the elections across all three levels of government.
‘‘It should be good.’’
The forum will be held at Moama Bowling Club on Wednesday, August 23 from 6.30pm.
Next month’s election for the newly formed council also includes the Greater Wakool Ward.
Neil Gorey, Alan Mathers and Ann Crowe (who are former Wakool councillors) will vie for a seat on council, while Katherine O’Brien and Christine Dartnell have also nominated.
Voting at the election is compulsory for Australian citizens aged over 18 and enrolled in the council area.
